Parents value their children above all things in life. When a newborn arrives in the household, parents tend to worry and want to be able to watch over them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, since babies are totally dependent on their parents for everything.

However, parents are human and thus they need time for meals and rest and can’t always give their undivided attention to their newborn. This is why baby monitors have brought parents some comfort knowing they can still keep an eye on their little one even when they’re in another room. These devices monitor your baby giving you peace of mind knowing that you will always be aware of what’s going on and able to act quickly if the need should arise.

What Are Baby Monitors?

A baby monitor, or baby alarm, is a device used to monitor your children or baby, even when they’re in a different room. It’s a simplex transmitter and receiver system that can be used to remotely listen for various noises made by your kids and/or baby.

You place a transmitter device that has a microphone in the room of your baby (usually near the baby). Another device with a receiver and speakers can then be carried by you, the parents, or your baby sitter, or anyone taking care of the baby. With a baby monitor, you’re able to keep track of your baby’s even if you’re busy doing the laundry or preparing a meal in an other location in your home.

Types of Baby Monitors

Baby monitors continue to evolve and over the years have developed from simple transmitter and receiver devices. There are currently two main types of baby monitors: video monitors and audio monitors.

Video baby monitors, of course, use video footage to observe events in the room where your baby is located. This device incorporates the technology used by webcams in your home computer. Rather than using just a simple transmitter with a microphone, a camera is also installed. The receiver, rather than just having speakers, has an LCD screen installed as well.

Video baby monitors also utilize current technology being used for the Internet. With the video monitor installed in your baby’s room, you can access the cameras and view their condition even when you’re away from home at your office or work place. All you need is a computer with Internet access and you’ve got an instant video feed directly from your baby’s room.

The other type of baby monitor is an audio only monitor, which is directly descended from the basic uni-directional system used by basic and older monitors. The newer types of audio baby monitors, however, have new technology integrated within them. Not only can you hear your baby, you can also actually talk back to him or her.

Some devices allow you to send commands to the baby’s device so you can play music to hush him/her back to sleep.

Either types of baby monitors, whether audio or video, can be wired or wireless. Wireless devices are usually more convenient than wired devices because you can go anywhere, anytime as long as both devices are within range.

The disadvantage to a wireless device, however, is that the connections tend to be affected by more interferences than a wired monitor.
