Should You Buy a Baltic Amber Teething Necklace For Your Baby or You?

Are you a parent who has heard about Baltic Amber teething necklaces and wonder if it is a good choice for your baby or yourself? I will help guide you through the decision and give you experiences to draw from.

A Baltic amber teething necklace is a necklace worn by a baby or toddler to help ease the discomfort of teething. A baby does NOT chew on the necklace, rather, wears the lightweight amber necklace around their neck against their skin (alternatives will be discussed in a bit) to achieve relief of teething pain. As the amber comes in contact with the skin it is warmed by the skin and releases succinic acid, a natural acid found in amber, the succinic acid is a natural anti-inflammatory. The acid is slowly absorbed in the skin, then into the blood stream and transported by the blood throughout the body. The decreased inflammation eases discomfort, slows and possibly eliminates drooling and allows teething to occur with minimal discomfort. Desired results are typically seen in about 4 hours and will last for the duration of wear time. There is no potential for a baby to receive too much succinic acid from wearing the necklace.

Baltic amber teething necklaces are called that because they come for the Baltic region. The Baltic region has the world’s largest supply of amber as well as having the highest concentration of succinic acid. Amber is an ancient resin, the older the amber the more concentrated the succinic acid. Amber from the Baltic region is 30-90 million years old. When buying an amber necklace, be sure it is pure Baltic amber from the Baltic region and not an amber substitute or “young” amber.

Most amber necklaces made for babies are safe for the baby to wear. The amber beads are typically strung on a 1mm waxed cotton string and knotted between every bead. This is important so that if the string were to break only 1 bead would fall off. Additionally the necklace is secured with a safety screw clasp. The screw post is glued into the hub and is designed to break free if under unusual tension. Necklace’s can be worn in the water but hard soaps, detergents and chemically treated water should be avoided.

For parents concerned with something around your babies neck there is an alternative. Wrap the necklace 2 times around the baby’s ankle and place under a sock or inside footed pajamas. Although night wear and sleep wear cannot be recommended because a baby cannot be supervised during those times a parent can choose the previous stated idea for night time wear. Many companies also sell amber anklets/bracelets. These are aprox. 5.5 inches in length and typically are not big enough to last throughout the teething period of a baby. Also, the more beads against the skin the more succinic acid that will be released and the greater potential for pain relief.

Only a parent can decide what is best for their baby. I recommend asking friends, family, other mommy’s or daddy’s or parents of baby’s that are wearing teething necklaces for feedback. I have had a 95% success rate in teething relief and of the failures most parents admit to only having the necklace on the baby for a short period of time. All babies are different and not everything will work every time. I can tell you my daughter went from miserable teething baby without a necklace to happy teething baby with a necklace. I have never had a necklace get caught around anything, I have not had one break on a baby but I did break one myself to ensure it would break if need be… it will.

What the skeptics say… There cannot be enough succinic acid to help a teething child in an amber necklace and it is a choking and strangulation hazard. I say, I am not a doctor but I am a certified medical professional with a BS in Health Sciences and I can tell you that succinic acid and a powerful natural anti-inflammatory. I have done no testing on it and have not testing or lab results to share with you. I can only tell you that it worked amazingly well got my daughter. A baby/child should be supervised at all times when wearing a necklace. The necklace if broken does have parts that are a potential choking hazard for a child under the age of 3. Take this into consideration when making your decision.

Amber teething necklaces can be work by a baby, child or an adult. I wear one and have noticed a decrease in pain associated with arthritis in my neck.

I hope this helps the decision making process and whatever method you choose as a parent to help your teething child I hope it works.
