The Baby Monitor of Today

It is always important to keep tabs on your child, even when they are sleeping. Since it is not always practical to be in the same room as your child as they sleep, many people use  baby   monitors  to keep track of their child.

A  baby   monitor  is a device that is placed in the child’s room or where they are sleeping. A transmitter in the baby’s room. Usually the transmitter will contain a microphone and today, some also have a built in video camera. The sounds of the room are then transmitted to a receiver that the parent can keep with them. Many times these will be small and resemble a walkie talkie.

Originally these monitors were physically wired together, so people commonly wired them into the home. Today, most people use wireless transmitters, which allow them to be used in pretty much any room of the house. The video monitors, which are increasingly popular, have a shorter range than those that only transmit audio. Many of these can be accessed over the internet, so they can be used away from the home.

The wireless monitors, which are by far the most common type used. Since it is wireless, it is possible for the signal to be intercepted, but most monitors take steps to allow this to be avoided, such as allowing transmission over different frequencies. Some also use a system called DECT, which is more secure, but some have concerns about the radiation put out by DECT.

DECT is the same technology that is used in most cordless phones and is designed to make transmissions private between the transmitter and receiver. It stands for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications and was originally developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, but has since been adapted by the United States and is used throughout the world.

The advantage of these devices is that if the baby begins to cry, the parent can be instantly aware. Some even allow the parent to talk to the child from another room or start music playing in the room.

Many  baby   monitors  also have a built in motion sensor, which will set off an alarm if the  baby  moves. Frequently a sensor is placed under the mattress that detect when the baby is moved. The receiver that the parent holds frequently has a vibrating or visual alert, which is important for those with difficulty hearing, but also so the child is not woken. Usually the transmitter in the child’s room is plugged in to the wall, while the receivers are battery powered. Some work similarly to a cell phone, which has a rechargeable battery, but others use regular disposable batteries.

The  baby   monitor  is very popular today and allows an eye or ear to be kept on the child at all times. This helps to increase safety, because as soon as the baby starts to cry or moves, you can be alerted. The video monitor is increasing in popularity, but the audio monitor is still the most common.
